Artist's Reception: Feb 6, 2004
Contemporary Fiber: Quilts and Beyond (a DAC Curated Exhibit) The DAC-curated exhibits are unique visual arts exhibits that showcase the abundance of talent and vision found within and around Durango. The purpose of these exhibits is to enhance our communitys appreciation of visual and cultural expression. These exhibits are a result of the combined efforts of local community members and area visual artists. These exhibits not only spotlight the work by local and regional artists but also place their work into a broader cultural context through presenting associated slide lectures and educational gallery tours. These presentations along with workshops and other special events create a multidisciplinary context that enhances ones understanding of art, artists, and the role of the arts in our society. Local artists, arts educators and professionals from within the community participate in these programs. Admission to the exhibits and all associated programs are free to the public.
The first of two DAC-curated exhibits in 2004 takes place in Feb and March. Contemporary Fiber: Quilts and Beyond is an invitational exhibit that surveys work by twelve Colorado fiber artists, two from Durango, who use traditional and nontraditional fiber materials and approaches in their beadwork, quilting, stitchery, and embellished sculpture. Durango-based textile artist, writer, and nationally known teacher Ilze Aviks, assisted with this exhibit by identifying fiber artists from around Colorado whose work is representative of work being created on a broader national level. The exhibit includes hand-dyed and stitched quilts by local artist Alison Goss and a sculptural fiber environment by Durango artist Dona Fleming as well as work by recognized Colorado artists. The exhibit will present various fiber art forms such as needlepoint paintings inspired by art historical paintings, conceptual fiber work using light and scale, fabric mobiles, embellished dolls, realistic images in bead embroidery, and quilts constructed out of discarded papers. Local artists Alison Goss and Dona Fleming will offer lectures and workshops in association with the exhibit. Educational tours presented by the DAC docents will be offered to the public and to elementary through high school classes. Sponsored by Jeanne Parks

Artist's Reception: May 4, 2007
Group Exhibit: Works by Erin Camarca, Karina Noel Hean, Rebecca Siefer and Alex Spencer May 1 through June 2 Artists reception, Friday, May 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. Erin Camarca labels her most recent works Rare Breeds. Each work showcases a mythologically based creature, its use as a domesticated beast and in many cases the handler of the animal. Erin works in colored pencil, watercolor pencil and oils to portray each with as much detail as possible. Karina Noel Hean creates untitled works on paper using charcoal, mud, decayed tree, conté, achitoe seed, ink, graphite and wax. Her drawings explore the spiritual, intellectual and physical aspects of what she perceives to be a most vital entity: nature. She believes the word nature eludes concrete definition, but is obvious to our senses. Her larger-than-life drawings are akin to the immensity and power of natures forces and effects. Rebecca Lillian Siefer floats colored ink and watercolor on paper, often adding other materials while the base is still wet to create textures. She loves the unpredictable outcome and movement that occurs in the process. Recently she has added Yupo, a water-resistant synthetic paper, as her subsurface. The color stays wet longer, giving her more freedom to work. Rebeccas artwork is intentionally untitled. She wants the viewer to be transported, not directed. Alex Spencer lives in Silverton, Colorado, surrounded by mountains. His medium is stone. His sculptures are influenced not only by his ideas but also by his love of the local environment. His pieces retain real rock texture, weight and a sense of durabilityqualities that outlast the life span of a human being.

Each year, different arts professionals are invited to jury the artwork submitted by local and regional artists. From the chosen works the juror will select several artists to receive cash prizes. This years juror will be Carol Martin, a local resident who has been immersed in the arts for many years. She has owned her own gallery, is a wellknown regional jewelry and mixed-media artist and is the chairman of the Public Art Commission. The Durango Area Tourism Office will also present awards to some of the selected artists who will receive twelve months of on-line promotion on the DATO website, an exhibit at the Visitors Center and will be featured in a special promotion of Durango. One artists image will be reproduced on a postcard for DATO.

Reverie, Group 3 Exhibit - Aug 7, 2007 - Aug 31, 2007
Artist's Reception: Aug 10, 2007
Reverie, a Group Exhibit with works by Elizabeth Buhr, Annette Coleman, Katie Hoffman and Roberta Smith August 7 through 31 Artists reception, Friday, August 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Four Colorado artists create work inspired by altered states, dreams, memories, journeys and fanciful musings. Elizabeth Buhr explores narratives drawn from memories and experiences of her childhood. The works on paper are an inquiry into the material integrity of cut paper and depth achieved through layering images by means of painting and collage. Annette Colemans dreams inspire her to create work investigating the meanings, layers, fragments and symbols that are conjured up through her dreamscapes. She uses old woodcuts, linocuts and drawn images as a visual tool to depict the mystery in her dreams. Katie Hoffmans fanciful portrayals of family, friends and animals take the viewer into a personal vision that gives common experiences a new twist. She starts with an underpainting of texture and color then layers paint, wax and other media onto the surface. The areas are worked and scraped down to give the impression of fragmented memory. Roberta Smith invents jewel-toned spaces where the real and the surreal meet in a compelling moment that pays homage to art history and human kinship. Her complex mixed media constructions chronicle the enigmatic allegory of dreams.
Louise Grayson's figurative paintings reveal strong emotional and narrative undertones in portraits of people engaged in everyday activities
